In this book we’ll go over everything I’ve learned about starting, running and maintaining a working profitable lawn care company over the past 5 years. I took 0.00 and turned it into 0k a year business in just under 3 years.

Please forgive me if I repeat myself a few times or some subjects run together.

Ok, let’s start at the beginning. I started working the lawn care business young. When I was 6 I took my dads beat up lawnmower and went door to door begging for work to buy Hot Wheel’s and models. Being only 6 my mom wouldn’t let me go very far, understandably. I worked close to home but as I got older I was able to go down the street a little farther. Pretty soon I was venturing 1 and then 2 streets over. After a while I had a pretty good gig going. I was cutting at least one yard a day and as a bonus I offered car washes while I was there too.

Life goes on and kids grow up. I did that for about 3 years as a kid and had a blast with the job and the income. I went into Mechanics. Turning wrenches for my dad at his shops and then on my own as income to support myself. I worked as a mechanic most of my life. One day I got up and being a mechanic just didn’t work for me anymore. From there I started working in the automatic door industry, the ones at the stores that all of us use everyday. Which was great, aside from the guy I worked for. It was a few months into it and I thought “this sucks” I don’t want to have to depend on someone else and I can’t work for this ass another day.

What could I do? Then it hit me like a ton of bricks! Mow lawns again. I used to do it, I could do it again. But that was just a kid job. Not something I could support my wife, mortgage and new baby boy with. But I knew I needed to do something, and soon. I had a truck, I had a trailer. It was an 18ft. trailer and I had no equipment but I had a truck and a trailer none the less.

I had nothing. I didn’t even have equipment for my own yard much less what it would take to service someone else’s and then expect to be called back again to do it all over. I knew I had the truck, I knew I had the trailer. I could get the equipment to do the job. I just needed some customers. My younger brother and I set out to create an income for ourselves in the lawn care industry. Now, I didn’t do the smart thing like you. I read nothing, gung ho, I know everything. I didn’t study anything, I didn’t look into equipment

Heck I hadn’t even mowed a yard in years. I don’t think my brother ever had. Our first day on the job was actually pretty fun. I decided that we would need to spread the word that we were in business and ready to help out. We went to the store and bought mini candy bars, rubber bands and some paper for the printer. We made up a flyer; it was made from a single sheet of paper divided in four ads on each sheet. We cut the ads out and wrapped them around the candy bars securing them with the rubber bands.

These were to be chucked on the doorsteps as we drove by each house. It would prove to be much faster then hanging the door hangers (we’ll talk about those later). We thought we were just riding high. We were going to get all these flyers out and the folks would just come pouring in. Right, remember how I said that I didn’t research anything. That would include the phone book as well. Seems there’s a lot of other guys that mow lawns too.

That being said check your local phone book and see how many companies are in your area. We tossed all those candy bars in about 3 hours. We got calls almost right away. One guy told me I was idiot and didn’t I know “dogs are allergic to chocolate.” Oops, that was the first call. The second thru the 25th or so were to tell me “we shouldn’t litter on people’s lawns.” And others we’re kind enough to point out that not only was I littering, they had a “no soliciting” sign and I could be turned in. Not a real good way to start things off I can tell you that.

After awhile I didn’t even want to answer the phone because I was afraid of being yelled at again. But I had to. It’s hard to start, run, and stay on top of a business if you won’t even answer the phone. Plus my wife was yelling at me to answer that darn phone and make some darn money!With all that excitement in the first few days I was ready to go ahead and go look for a job again. But….we did finally get a good call from a real customer. I was so nervous I’m surprised he could even understand me. He said that he used to have a lawn guy but he never showed up again and that he had no contact with them. I paid no attention to it really I was just happy to have our first customer call.

Again I’ll go back and talk about doing some research before you answer your phone. We got someone to call, he wanted some work done, but now what the heck do I charge him? I was stuck on the phone with a man that at that point seemed like he held my entire future in his hands and couldn’t figure out what to charge him. I was put on the spot and had no idea what the going rate was for a lawn service in my area.

My first price I gave him was .00 for his lot. Theses days I charge .00 for a lot like his, and we’re there for about 10 minutes to do the job. He said “you’ve got to be kidding me.” I had to switch gears real quick and give him a better price. We agreed on .00 and bam just like that we had our first real customer!We were real excited to have a customer and I was relieved to have made it through my first real negotiation and land our first service account. I was researching things now and I wasn’t about to be put into that position again.

Ok, so we had an account to service. Now we needed the stuff to service it. I was at Lowes first thing the next morning banging on the door for it to open so I could get a 9.00 lawn more and an .00 weed eater that had both the edger and the line trimmer attachments. I also needed a blower. We started with a hand held .00 blower. Man we were set; mower, line trimmer slash edger and a real gas blower. Nice!

The phone was ringing. Before we knew it we had 2 then 5 and pretty soon 10 customers. The 0.00 worth of equipment was already getting too hard to deal with doing that many yards a day. A 9.00 side discharge non self propelled mower really doesn’t work anymore at that point. It’s time to upgrade. I marched myself into Lowes once again and returned my mower so I could get the “better” 9.00 self propelled bagging mower.

Oh man what a difference that was. Now we could do like 5 lawns in 8 hours. Yes, 5 lawns a day. At that point, with equipment we had, it was huge for us to be able to get 5 lawns a day done without killing ourselves (we’ll talk more about equipment later). Oh yea we started in TX. and it was a drought to boot. Nice timing for sure. It’s never been that dry here and we’ve never been in heat like that before, coming from CA. We made it through our first season and I was looking forward to taking sometime off to regroup and hit it hard the next season.

We ended the season with about 20 customers; getting 5 or so a day done with our Lowes bought equipment. Other lawn companies would laugh at us as they went by.
